Rachael’s Story

I met Russ in 2007 through a mutual friend. We were in love from the minute we started dating so it came as no surprise when Russ proposed to me on bended knee in front of my family in 2009.

We both loved the United States so we chose to tie the knot in Las Vegas 2010.

Russ had a son named Sam from a previous marriage. He was a good kid and the three of us were very close.

Sadly in 2015 after suffering from depression and stress, Russ took his life. I was overwhelmed, in shock and disbelief. I just kept relieving the final days in my head thinking, could have I prevented it? I was emotional and beside myself but had to put that aside and find a way to sort out my husband's funeral.

Sam was there and we leant on each other for support.

Shortly after the funeral, it was discovered that Russ didn't have a Will.

As Sam was not of legal age his mother stepped in and she went straight to Lawyers to demand his entire estate.

Although Russ had purchased a home before we married we bought an apartment together.

My sadness and grief after Russ’s death soon turned into stress then anger and many sleepless nights. Russ knew his ex-wife to be a difficult woman. I just couldn’t understand why he would put me through this.

In 2020, five years after Russ had passed away his estate settled.

I had to refinance my apartment to keep it, I estimate it cost me $250,000 to refinance my apartment and pay Lawyers. The whole ordeal took five years and during this time I had no idea if I’d even be able to keep the apartment I had bought with Russ. My life was put on hold with the endless calls from Lawyers going through documents. By the end of it all I left emotionally beaten, drained, and angry.

I’ve only recently been able to forgive Russ for leaving me in this situation. Sadly, Sam and I no longer speak.

Rachael's story is a poignant reminder of how not having a Will can negatively impact the lives of your loved ones long after your passing.
